Piedmont
Cà Nova was founded in Bogogno, Piedmont, in 1996 by Giada Codecasa, with her father, Vittorio, when they decided to revive their seventeenth-century farmhouse and restore the surrounding abandoned vineyards. In a few years, they had planted about ten hectares of vineyards on the slopes of the Novara hills and established their winery. Near the farmhouse, on a small, south-facing hill, is Vigna San Quirico, which provides the grapes for their prized Nebbiolo. This vineyard has a particularly rich mineral soil because of the rocks and materials left from the moraine of the glacier. Northern Piedmont, or Alto Piemonte, is generally cooler than south, with a more pronounced alpine influence and more rainfall. All the vines are Guyot trained, allowing for easier pruning to obtain lower yields per hectare and greater quality of the grapes. All vineyard treatments are environmentally friendly.
After manually picking all the grapes, they are transported to the processing area for destemming or pressing. The must is transferred to fermentation tanks, where cold maceration is followed by alcoholic fermentation, with the addition of selected yeasts, at controlled temperatures. The wine is then racked into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for clarification and stabilization. The red wines are sent to the aging cellar where malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. All the wines are aged in the bottle for at least six months, allowing them time to mature.
The 2014 “San Quirico” shows aromas of dried red berries, orange peel, tea leaf, rose, anise, leather, and dried earth. The palate is linear, with fine-grained tannins balanced by firm acidity. An excellent pairing for lamb sugo or your favorite sausage-and-mushroom pizza.
